Albena Vatcheva (ALBENA) is a French-Bulgarian artist who has been living in Normandy for 30 years. First a poet and architect in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, she "tamed" oil painting after her arrival in . ALBENA creates figurative style works, on canvas or wood in the old style, using successive layers ("glazes") and enhanced with ink. Her first visual inspirations are richly illustrated books from her childhood.
Born in the Thracian lands of Orpheus, ALBENA feels the fundamental need to reconnect with the traditions of her ancestors. As she says, "creation is a perpetual search for myself, through mythologies, legends, tales of my childhood, life and dreams, images embedded in my consciousness. Each painting is a caress preserved for eternity, a wonderful meditation that I wish to share with the public."
ALBENA has exhibited in galleries, museums and art fairs around the world and has won numerous awards for her work, including the bronze medal of the Salon des Artistes Français at the Grand Palais – Paris. The artist’s very particular style, inspired by various cultures, is a reflection of a sensual and spiritual sensibility whose richness is quickly establishing itself in the art world.
