This artwork is about Time. Time is the greatest mystery. There is still no single theory that explains what time is.
In this painting, the artist tried to stop a moment. A moment is our life. Or, to put it another way, our life is made up of many moments. The feeling of a moment is conveyed through various techniques. For example, the woman, who personifies time, is depicted in motion. Her face has two angles—that’s how we see movement in multi-exposure photos. The woman’s hair moves in one direction, and the silk headscarf she holds in her hand moves in the opposite direction. That is, we see two directions of movement at the same time.
The zeros encrypt the beginning and the end. And if you look deeper, they are a symbol of infinity, eternity and cyclicity, like the world serpent Ouroboros.
A clock depicted on the background of 12 lines, which symbolises 12 hours — half of the day. 12 in general is a symbolic and mystical number: 12 signs of the zodiac, 12 months, 12 Olympian gods, 12 apostles and so on.
In the woman’s hair, we see the different phases of the moon. However, they are depicted in reverse—from the old moon to the full moon, and a hint of the young moon.
It also alludes to the ancient Roman God Janus, who had one face facing the past and the other looking into the future. There were 12 altars in honour of Janus. The Romans also regarded him as the creator of the world and the god of Time.
This artwork will be available for sale after the art exhibition.
