Sigmund Freud, the 19th century Viennese physician, father of psychoanalysis and theorist of the unconscious, is a leading figure in contemporary psychology. Even though other scientists have developed his theories since his time, and the means of therapy have expanded and diversified, Freud remains a precursor in his field. For me, he represents one of the symbols of those human beings who were able to create, innovate, invent new paradigms and fight against the ideas of their time in order to advance them. When I began the 'icons' series, the portrait of Freud appeared quite early on. I'd chosen a photo of him as a model, in which he appeared rather stern, but the interpretation I made of it didn't suit me. I let a few years go by, then went back to painting. I then changed my model, choosing a photo in which he exuded more empathy and kindness. The way I painted was different too: oil paint replaced the acrylics of the early days, and the fades between the colours became more fluid. As the model was in black and white, I chose skin tones that could be realistic, but I insisted on emphasising the orange glasses, recalling the character's originality and craziness!
Because yes, Sigmund was neurotic too!

Dejé pasar unos años y volví a pintar.
