The sculpture reimagines the Buddhist *Abhaya Mudra*—a gesture of fearlessness—as a meditation on the fragility and plurality of human existence. The thumb, stripped to bare bone, confronts the viewer with mortality, while the four fingers morph into distinct human faces, each frozen in a unique emotional state: anguish, serenity, defiance, and surrender.

This juxtaposition speaks to the duality of our nature—the unyielding skeleton beneath the flesh, and the myriad masks we wear in life. The *mudra*, traditionally a symbol of protection, here becomes a mirror: our bones bind us to the inevitability of decay, yet our expressions—our "faces"—shape the ephemeral drama of being. Neither flesh nor bone alone defines us; it is the tension between them that etches the *laksana* (相) of our shared fate.

Notes:
1. The Artwork will be shipped in non-fumigation plywood case. A signed Certificate of Authenticity will be included.

2. The actual size of the artwork may be slightly different with a tolerance of +/- 2cm, as each edition was casted manually.

Chen Fengyong is an emerging contemporary sculptor from China, holding a Master's degree in Sculpture from Tsinghua University. Specializing in bronze and stainless steel, he crafts evocative figurative works that delve into the profound nature of humanity and the universe. His artistic journey began at the age of 20, driven by a deep fascination with the essence of life, the laws of existence, and the interplay between perception and reality. Stylistically, his work draws inspiration from the timeless aesthetic language of ancient Eastern sculpture.

Chen thrives in the serenity of creation, where a meditative state allows him to experience tranquility and a harmonious unity with his art. This introspective joy—quiet yet enduring—permeates his figurative sculptures, which often capture moments of stillness and contemplation. His stainless steel pieces, meanwhile, reflect philosophical inquiries into the nature of being.

For Chen, sculpture is both a dialogue with the self and a conversation with the world. He sees the relationship between the whole and its parts as a metaphor for the interconnectedness of the universe and the individual—a dynamic that fuels his creative process. Immersed in this cycle of thought and expression, his work evolves through continuous exploration, deepening with each new realization.

In recent years, Chen has been invited to contribute to several prestigious national art projects. From 2020 to 2021, he participated in the clay and stone carving stages of *The Great Cause*, a monumental sculpture commemorating the centenary of the Communist Party of China, as part of Tsinghua University's "21 Project" creative team. Between 2020 and 2023, he served as a visiting professor at China Women's University, teaching *Three-Dimensional Modeling Methods*. In 2023, he collaborated with Time Difference Island, a Beijing-based media company, to create installation art for the cultural program *Wandering and Singing*.

Through his evolving body of work, Chen Fengyong invites viewers to ponder the quiet depths of existence, bridging tradition and contemporary thought with every form he shapes.
