Gaël Darras (Né en 1990) vit et travaille à Escamp (Lot). Il est diplômé de l’École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Nantes Métropole (DNSEP) et a suivi une formation d’enluminure auprès du Maître enlumineur Jean-Luc Leguay qui dirige le Centre international des traditions de l’image de lumières (CITIL) à Paris. Il est représenté par la Galerie Robet Dantec à Belfort qui lui consacre sa première exposition personnelle en galerie en 2021. Il est régulièrement invité pour des expositions collectives et personnelles dans des lieux d’art contemporain. À partir du motif de la brique, unité inlassablement répétée, Gaël Darras construit à l’aquarelle des espaces architecturés au style minimaliste. Ses bâtiments, désinvestis de toute fonctionnalité, sont dénués de contextualisation spatiale et de marqueur temporel précis – ils nous portent vers une antiquité lointaine autant qu’ils évoquent nos maçonneries contemporaines. Ces constructions ne s’habitent pas, ne se pénètrent pas : ce sont des murs. Ils montrent autant qu’ils dissimulent, poussent le regard à chercher au-delà. Gaël Darras fabrique lui même ses aquarelles. L’utilisation de l’oxyde de fer comme pigment (celui-là même qui donne sa couleur rouge à la brique) déploie un univers monochrome et contemplatif où chaque brique vibre d’une densité particulière. Gaël Darras use d’outils communs à l’architecte et au peintre (perspective cavalière, point de fuite, règle, compas, équerre) et s’intéresse à différentes traditions et techniques de composition de l’image. Il puise notamment dans la géométrie symbolique héritée des enlumineurs du Moyen-Âge (proportions dorées, rectangles dynamiques, polygones, etc...) et dans l’histoire de la fresque, depuis les villas pompéiennes aux chapelles des primitifs italiens. Comme poussé par une réécriture continue du mythe de Babel, Gaël Darras, dans une constante répétition du geste, du motif et du sujet, semble explorer les contours d’un seul et même monument imaginaire et fantastique.
