Principalement influencé par la peinture impressionniste et la photographie Pictorialiste, Jean-Baptiste Isambert se détourne de la fonction documentaire de la photographie et cherche à donner un aspect esthétique à la transcription de ses réflexions.
Travaillant en pleine nature, photographiant « sur le motif », l'artiste est attentif aux contrastes, aux couleurs, aux formes et aux matières. Ces éléments constituent une véritable palette de peintre qui lui permet désormais, en appliquant un geste, de composer un tableau pressenti lors d'une phase d'observation. Cette vision de la photographie, proche de l'idéologie Pictorialiste, n'exclue pas une réelle volonté d'authenticité de la part de l'artiste qui développe ses photographies fidèlement au fichier brut, sans effets ni recadrages.
Avec la série « Phototropisme » (2017) puis « Paysages Imaginaires » (2018), l'artiste affirme son style pictural et symbolique. La liberté d'interprétation qu'il trouve en ce procédé lui permet littéralement de « peindre avec la lumière » pour nous offrir des paysages imaginaires oscillants entre réalité et abstraction.
