The central figure is a teenage boy submerged in philosophical literature on human origin, occultism, and existential meaning. His head is replaced by a broken laboratory flask, symbolizing the fragmentation of logical thinking and the loss of coherence.
From the toxic overflow of metaphysical ideas emerges a surreal vision: a deconstructed, hole-ridden “Übermensch” (Superhuman) composed of glassy chemical apparatus — an embodiment of unreachable ideals distorted by delusion. Vapors of this mental poison drift through the image, culminating in a drop — a metaphor for the inability to translate vast knowledge into clear thought.
Books are physically attached to the teen’s arms with sticky tapes, restricting movement and social , while an outstretched hand from the outside world is unable to reach him. The green and lime palette reflects intellectual fatigue, distortion of perception, and cognitive alienation.
This piece is part of the "Atlas of Madness" series, which blends psychiatry with metaphorical visual storytelling to raise awareness and reduce the stigma around mental health disorders.

Nolan Trace is a psychiatrist and self-taught artist working at the intersection of medical illustration and surrealism. His project, Atlas of Madness, is a visual dossier of mental disorders based on real clinical experience and scientific literature. These are not stylized or imaginary depictions — they are precise visual interpretations of destructive mental states.
He works with alcohol-based markers and fineliners on watercolor paper, achieving maximum expressiveness and analytical clarity. Each piece is accompanied by a detailed description that combines both scientific insight and artistic interpretation.
His goal is to bring mental illness out of the shadows, dismantle clichés, and show these conditions as they are felt from within.
Since 2018, Nolan has been creating works that disturb, provoke, and make the viewer think. His projects include a book publication, exhibitions, lectures, and collaborations with educational and medical institutions. His art is not decorative — it is a tool for investigation. His mission is not to entertain, but to open eyes.
