The concept of the painting "Labyrinths of the Subconscious" represents a deep and multi-layered exploration of the human psyche, reflecting the complex connections between the past, present, and future. At the center of the composition is a large exotic butterfly with shiny white wings, symbolizing transformation and the lightness of being. It seems to strive to land on the muzzle of a huge prehistoric wolf, which can be interpreted as a confrontation between instinctual primal power and the fragile beauty of existence.

Between the butterfly and the wolf is the face of a young girl wearing green glasses and a reddish-golden fox, symbolizing innocence and playfulness, as well as the connection between the real and the fantastical. The girl's face can be interpreted as the embodiment of the modern individual striving to understand their place in the world, while the fox adds an element of cunning and deception.

In the shadow of the wolf's head are several male characters—a brigand, a monk, and an intellectual geologist. Each represents different aspects of human nature: struggle, morality, and the pursuit of knowledge. Just below, there is a demon's head riding a deer, which introduces an element of chaos and subconscious fears, embodying internal conflicts.

To the left of the butterfly is a lady with wings, united with a Madonna, which may symbolize a combination of femininity, holiness, and spirituality. A baby mammoth and the profile of an old man resembling Einstein represent a blend of antiquity and wisdom, emphasizing the cyclical nature of time.

The lower edge of the painting is filled with less significant characters—fairytale heroes, fantasy figures, aliens, kittens, and Native Americans. These elements evoke childhood tales and the surprises of fate, creating a sense of nostalgia and innocence that contrasts with the more serious themes presented in the upper part of the painting.

The upper edge of the canvas is filled with strange mystical faces and animals, creating an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. The painting is executed in yellow-brown, earthy tones, which evoke a sense of warmth and organic quality. The colorful background resembles the intertwining branches of a jungle, symbolizing the fleeting nature of faces, events, encounters, and partings, highlighting the transience of existence and the complexity of human experience.

Thus, "Labyrinths of the Subconscious" becomes not just an image but an entire space for reflection on the multifaceted nature of humanity, the ways in which the past shapes the present, and how our perception of the future depends on our inner world and experiences.

Sofia Markina, a candidate of technical sciences and a retired associate professor with 40 years of experience, has always found joy in creativity throughout her life. Although her primary career was deeply rooted in science, she consistently and joyfully engaged in knitting, creating models, and selecting patterns. She crafted dresses, bags, swimsuits, and hats, infusing her daily life with creativity on a practical level.
Until recently, painting was a closed door for her. An art teacher once told her in school, "This is not for you, girl," and she believed him. However, during the pandemic, she learned about right-brain drawing and decided to explore this new avenue. This exploration became a revelation for her: she completed several courses, attended the Rumak School, fell in love with acrylics, and hopes she has finally found her unique style. Despite lacking formal artistic education, she has participated in twelve exhibitions and an art tour of Baikal.
Sofia Markina is a contemporary Russian artist. In her works, she strives to capture the fleeting images of our short lives, their multilayered nature, and complexity. She explores how we perceive ourselves and see others. Her fantastical, collage-like narratives are full of vibrant color experiments. Technically, she creates rich compositions filled with numerous characters, allowing the viewer to feel and embody various situations.
Sofia invites the viewer to collaborate: one does not see with just the eyes but with the mind. She outlines the painting and gives hints through color, leaving space for interpretation. What the viewer sees will form their own story in their mind, if they choose to see, if they wish to engage, if they are able. This concept is reminiscent of an old Dadaist game: "Find it, understand it, piece together this puzzle in your mind."
The illusion of perception is a distorted evaluation of either a real or fantastical image, creating a discrepancy between what a person sees and what exists in reality. Each individual will be absolutely convinced of their own correctness and may fervently defend their viewpoint or, conversely, by indifferently, perhaps tired or preoccupied. However, it may be worth taking a closer look once more, and you might see an entirely different story.
